You’ve purchased new curtains and you are ready to see them transform your living space, but… we all know that choosing is the easy part!

Now, it’s time to see your newly purchased curtains bring your home to life. There’s no denying the incredible difference high-quality curtains can make to a room.

Not only can curtains transform a room, but curtain rods also add that extra little bit of detail and refinement. Curtains can be the accent feature of any room when carefully chosen and installed correctly. They can accentuate the colour palette or enhance a rooms’ themed interior.

So… you’ve covered the fundamentals; your curtains and accompanying curtain rods are ready and waiting. Now it’s time to hang them up. There are many ways you can go about installing curtain rods. Following the steps below will save you great time and effort, ensuring the installation is done properly, while making sure your beautiful new curtains are safe and secure.

What you’ll need:

  • Curtain rod holder.
  • Drill
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Brackets

Install curtain rods in three easy steps

Before you begin the installation process the first thing you must do is identify the type of wall you have, this will determine the type of fixings and screws that you will need.

If you are installing your curtain rod onto a brick, or timber wall you will need specific plugs and screws for the different type of wall you are working with.

1. Measuring the window and the curtain rod

Measure the space between the two architraves, then measure the rod to ensure that the rod is the correct length size. You need to make sure your rod has a minimum of 30mm overhang. Accommodating for overhang ensures that your curtains provide full coverage, making sure no light enters in on the early mornings that you want to catch some extra Z’s.

2. Install the curtain rod holders

Place curtain rod holder (bracket) on the outside of the left-hand architrave fixing the bracket to the top of the architrave. (the architrave is the border frame that outlines the window). Clearly mark out the place where you will drill in the bracket with a pen or pencil, then proceed with pre-drilling the screw holes. Screw the brackets in place making sure they are aligned at both ends.

3. Place the curtain rod into the curtain rod holders

Align and slip curtain rings onto the rod and position the rod carefully onto the brackets. Lastly, join the rod and the holders together with small screws to stop the rod from slipping sideways.
